HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS
Methods of application - Bathe | Inhalations | Skin
How to bathe in essential oils:
-Draw bath to desired temperature.
-Add 6- 10 drops of chosen essential oil(s). Try adding the oils to an eggcup full of milk to help the oils disperse more evenly.
-Mix around in water.
-Relax and soak for 20mins.
-Pat dry with towel to continue to absorb the goodness of the oils.
How to Inhale essential oils
This method is ideal for colds and flu, coughs and bronchial disorders, as well as problem skin.
-Boil water & pour in a large bowl
-add a drop or 2 (no more!) of chosen essential oil(s)
-place towel over head & lean over bowl
-if the oil is strong ensure you close your eyes to avoid irritation
-breathe in deeply & slowly. I find counting the in breath for 4 seconds & the out breath for 5 seconds is good.
-inhale like this for at least 2 minutes.
Do this as many times a day as you wish for breathing problems, coughs, colds, flu, etc..
3 times a day is good OR once or twice a day for problem skin.
Other inhalation techniques:
Put a drop or two of chosen oil onto a tissue, to lift your mood, ease nasal congestion or releive headaches migraine or nausea ( PEPPERMINT & LAVENDER are good for nausea).
You could also place a drop or two of your chosen oil onto your jumper or pillow for desired effects, be warned that they may stain.
Another popular way or inhaling oils is using an oil burner
The most popular use a small candle or tealight to heat the mix of oil and water above it, which releases the oils into the room. These are ideal for the home and for being used under supervision.
However a candle burner is not suitable for all places especially when you cant keep an eye on it all the time, for this we suggest an electrical oil burner.
These oil burners fall within the health and safety guidelines in workplaces, hospitals, hospices and residential homes, so EVERYONE can benefit from the healing powers of essential oils. Check out our range of oil burners
Applying essential oils to the skin
In general it is not recommended that you apply neat essential oil to the skin. They should be diluted first in a carrier oil before applying to the skin.
However ther are a few exception to the rules, you can apply lavender, ti-tree & lemon neat in certain cases if your skin is not sensitive to the oil. If in doubt, do a skin patch test (see essential oil safety guide).
Lavender can be applied neat to mild burns, bites, stings, bruises, spots.
Ti tree can be applied to spots, infected bites & stings, abcesses, boils, verrucaes & warts. Lemon can be applied neat to warts, verrucaes, & cold sores.
Bergamot & eucalyptus can also be applied neat to cold sores, but in all cases use a cotton bud to apply the oil to prevent irritating the surrounding healthy skin.
Applying diluted oils or our TLC blended aromatherapy oils to your pulse points can be an effective method of application too.
TIP A drop of ylang ylang and grapefruit in 10mls of carrier oil helps to reduce stress levels and nerves, boosting confidence.
Rub diluted oils onto chest to ease breathing problems and congestion.
Rub diluted oils clockwise in a circle around the belly for stomach complaints.
Storage
Always store oils in cool, dry and dark conditions in a dark glass container. This will keep them effective and fresh for longer.
