Aromatherapy Florals For Spring

Spring is in the air! When I think of Spring, the first thing that comes to mind is flowers. In aromatherapy, there are several floral essential oils that can be enjoyed.

Essential oils are the basis for aromatherapy treatments, and are derived from herbs, flowers, spices, fruits, woods, and resins.

Aromatherapy is natural and effective, and has many physical and emotional benefits. Aromatherapy can be used in the form of eye pillows, candles, bath beads, salts, oils, and gels, on a lightbulb/lamp, perfume, creams, a potpourri bag to scent clothes, massage oils, as a pillow spray, simmering potpourri to scent the air and humidify your home, and many more uses.

Aromatherapy Florals

Geranium
A native of Africa, the geranium plant was brought to Europe in the late 17th centruy. There are now more than 700 species, of which P. graveolens and P. odoratissimum are the ones most commonly used in aromatherapy. Geranium is a soothing oil with a sweet, floral fragrance. It has a balancing effect on the body during menstruation and menopause and is also beneficial for problem skin. It is also uplifting, and is useful against stress and anxiety.

Jasmine
Jasmine is a rich, luxurious oil with an exotic, floral fragrance. This uplifting scent is often used to stimulate the senses, as well as promoting confidence and optimism.

Lavender
Lavender is the most versatile of all essential oils with its familiar, floral fragrance. It is an excellent antiseptic and has been widely used for centuries. Also known for it's relaxing and comforting effects, Lavender can also help promote sleep.

Neroli
Neroli is a sensual, steadying oil with a beautiful floral fragrance. It helps with stressful situations and fear, and has a balancing effect during menopause.

Rose
Rose is the queen of all essential oils with a delightful, familiar floral fragrance. It is an enhancing oil, bringing physical and emotional stability. Also known for its balancing effect, Rose is excellent for women's health. It is relaxing and soothing, and has been reported as being an aphrodisiac.

Ylang Ylang
Ylang Ylang is a sensual, relaxing oil with a powerful, exotic floral fragrance. Used traditionally as an aphrodisiac, it is also beneficial for both oily and dry skin. It can also help with insomnia.

When using oils that come in direct contact with the skin, it's important to remember these 7 safety tips:

1. Always read and follow all label warnings and cautions.

2. Keep oils tightly closed and out of the reach of children.

3. Never ingest essential oils. (Unless directed to do so by a qualified practitioner.) Some oils are extremely toxic if ingested.

4. Don't use undiluted oils on your skin. Dilute oils with vegetable oils, one to three drops per teaspoon.

5. Keep oils away from eyes and mucous membranes.

6. Skin test oils before using. Dilute a small amount and apply to the skin of your inner arm. Do not use if redness or irritation occurs.

7. If redness, burning, itching, or irritation occur, stop using oil immediately.
